As amusing as it is to make fun of Rand, abnegation of the type she points at is a big problem and it is a huge reason people end up depowering. Some EAs try to gaslight themselves into having a false model of their own preferences, through what looks a lot like emotional blackmail. Those who can maintain life as approximate utilitarians are often low-empathy number-go-uppers or extremely high empathy, agreeable and depressive-leaning number-go-downers who identify with suffering. People in the middle can get in trouble.

It is degrading to the self to pretend to have desires one does not, Orwellian to maintain a self narrative at odds with one’s actual preferences. Highly effective people usually have a bespoke, motivating ideology developed in their youth, often vaguely-utilitarian but with an emphasis on personal glory.

I think motivation lives somewhere in pursuing one’s natural talents (because being better than others at something feels good) and some vision of the good or aesthetics or something that contains a lot of room for personal glory.
